Can it ever be too early or too late to start introducing new technology in the classroom? Whether a teacher is reluctant to change or students are too young to understand, there will always be roadblocks regarding when, what, and how technology can be implemented into a learning environment. However, at one Catholic school in Illinois, a kindergarten teacher is demonstrating that these roadblocks need not apply.

A year after introducing her class to the Prowise Pro Line interactive flat panel, teacher Debbie McDermott has found that her students have become more engaged and motivated during their daily lessons. Likewise, Debbie has herself discovered that after nearly two decades of teaching, the Prowise Pro Line Panel has changed her teaching style and outcomes for the better. The panel’s ease-of-use and flexibility enables her to use it seamlessly every day, while delivering inspiring and empowering interactive lessons for her class. Let’s hear from Debbie about her experience:

ELB: “Where do you teach? And how long have you been teaching?”

Debbie: “I teach at St. Mary’s Immaculate School in Plainfield, Illinois and have been teaching for 19 years.”

ELB:
“How long have you been using technology in your classroom?”

Debbie:
“I have always used some form of technology since I started teaching at St. Marys. I have used tape recorders for presentations, tablets for reviewing lessons, laptops (usually in the STEM lab), and interactive whiteboards in the third-grade. Now I am using the Prowise interactive flat panel in my Kindergarten class.”

ELB:
“What is your favorite thing about the Prowise Panel and or Presenter Software?”

Debbie:
“Wow, where do I start! The panel is so easy to use and I love being able to be creative with my lessons on my laptop and then present it to the students on the panel. I can easily move from one activity to another and keep the day flowing. I have even taken suggestions from my students on how to prepare lessons. During our religious lessons, the students recreated the Creation story on the Prowise panel. They were so engaged and eager to interact with the content. I could go on forever about all the features this panel has to offer.”

ELB:
“How long have you been using the Prowise solution in your classroom?”

Debbie:
“I was introduced to Prowise in May of 2017. I was skeptical at first because I struggled with using previous interactive whiteboards in the past. Once I gave it a try, I fell in love with the ease-of-use and endless possibilities of the panel.”

ELB:
“What is your favorite tool to use in our Presenter software?”

Debbie:
“I enjoy creating the 9 squares to record all my activities for the week. It puts everything I need in one place.”

ELB:
“How has Prowise helped you and your students?”

Debbie:
“The students are active participants in their lessons and enjoy being my morning meeting helper! They choose the color of the Presenter pencil and get right to work marking the sight words in every morning letter. They also enjoy using the letter tiles to create words, built-in word searches, and creating projects.”

ELB:
“Have you created a lesson with Presenter that you would like to share?”

Debbie:
“I have created two that I am proud of. The first one is about Creation: 2 or 3 students come up to board at a time and draw a part of the creation story as it is read. They discuss what they each would do and add details. The students enjoy replaying the creation story as it is read one step at a time. The second lesson is our farm unit. Each students brings information regarding a specific farm animal. We take the information and type out the facts with missing words. The class helps sound out the words while a student is able to write and then read the fact. As a group, the students were given elements about their farm animal to illustrate and the group created a picture on the Prowise panel demonstrating this. I was then able to share this with their parents.”

ELB:
“Is there any advice you would like to share with other teachers using Prowise?

Debbie:
“Give it a try! I am not a “techy” person and I was not sure how interactive it would be for my students. I was completely wrong! We use the Prowise solution throughout the day. I take a lot of notes as I practice new things and I even created a few “cheat sheets” to refer back to. The more tools I tried on the panel, the more I discovered!”

ELB:
“Any other comments about your or your experience with ELB and Prowise?”

Debbie:
“I can’t imagine not having it in my classroom. It has allowed me to bring in technology on a daily basis due to its ease of use. Thanks to Madison, our ELB Education Consultant, and her patience in letting me watch and explore.”
